A Royal Military Tattoo

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

Last year we had the opportunity to take a trip north of the border to experience the Edinburgh Tattoo. This was my second time at this amazing event and it certainly disappoint.

We also take a bit of time to wander around at Andrews and Edinburgh to see some of the performers at the fringe which happens at the same time. If you haven't been I would highly recommend this truly special event which takes place in August each year.

The first military Tattoo in Edinburgh was performed in 1950. In 2010, for the 60th anniversary of the event, the late Queen Elizabeth II added the "Royal" to the name making it the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo.

The word Tattoo comes from a 17th century Dutch phrase ‘doe den tap toe’ which means ‘turn off the tap’. Which was a call played by trumpeters and drummers to tell bars and pub landlords to stop serving alcohol and announce to soldiers that it was time to return to the barracks.

Since then the word Tattoo has became associated with different types of military performances and nowadays the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo adopts a different theme each year and features over a 1000 performers coming from 6 continents.

It is estimated that over 200,000 people a year attend the performances in addition to many more who watch on TV or the internet. Despite this the event makes no profit as all the money goes to military charities.

If you haven't had the opportunity to witness this amazing show of military precision and order as well as highly skilled musicianship we would highly recommend it but make sure you book your tickets early as they sell out quickly

We would also recommend that you organise your accommodation and car parking well in advance as places are limited and can get quite expensive.
